The University is a comprehensive university of inter-penetration of liberal arts, sciences and engineering. It was founded on May 4,1993. As a local university, the University is the first in the country that passed the state's "Project 211" preliminary examination in Janauary,1996. And in November, 1997, it is officially listed as one of the national key construction university in China. The university covers disciplines of literature, history, philosophy, sciences, engineering, agriculture, law, economics, management, education and arts. A new school-running pattern of "inter-penetration of liberal arts, sciences and engineering and close combination of education, research and industry " has been preliminary formed in it.    The University (excluding the new campus) occupied an area of nearly 67 hectares and is composed of South and North Campuses. The new campus, located in Hongjiaozhou, northern part of Nanchang, covers an area of 240 hectares and is being constructed into an ecological, modern and digital garden-style area. The National Science and Technology Garden, which is situated in Nanchang State Hi-Tech Development Zone, is under construction. At present, the university is composed of 22 administrative department, 26 teaching departments, 5 public education departments, 25 research institutes and 56 laboratories. In addition, it runs several business units including Modern Education and Technology Center, Computer Center and Information Engineering and Technology Research Institute. It's buildings have a total floor space of over 849,600 square meters, and the total value of instruments and equipment is about 135,000,000 RMB yuan. The two libraries have a collection of over 1,720,000 volumes and are equipped with computerized managing system, multimedia reading-rooms and electronic searching rooms. The university has the only Mirror Service Link (MSL) in Jiangxi for China Academic Journals, which offers information search service for the higher education and research. The Journal of Nanchang University (including three editions of social sciences and humanities, natural science and engineering) is on the list of key journals of China Academic Periodicals and is distributed both at home and abroad. The university's computer network is the central node of China Education and Research Network (CERNET) in Jiangxi, which offers service and technical support for the connection into the CERNET of colleges and universities in Jiangxi.

Presently, the University has 30,348 students, including more than 26,000 undergraduates, 1,135 master degrees candidates and 86 doctoral candidates. The university currently has 1,272 faculty and staff, with 193 professors and 439 associate professors, among whom 87 have been conferred doctorate. The University now has 2 Special Professorship Listed in the State "Yangtze Scholar Awarding Program" (food science, material physical and chemistry), 2 teachers selected into China's Project for Talents, and 8 national-leveled young specialists of sciences and technology of their achievements. The university has 2 state key disciplines, 1 key laboratory and 1 key engineering research center listed among key construction items of the Ministry of Education respectively, 16 provincial key disciplines,20 provincial famous specialists. It now confers master's degree in 60 subjects, doctoral degrees in 5 subjects (Management Science and Engineering is a first-level discipline), and it has 1 post-doctoral research center. Authorized by the State Council, the University can confer master's degree to on-job postgraduates with the same educational level. This University is also authorized to confer engineering master's degree, MBA(a joint program with University de Poitiers), and engineering master's degrees of software and information technology (a joint program with University of Abertay Dundee).Besides, it has MPA and JM programs with other domestic institutions. Approved by the Education Ministry and the PLA General Political Department, the University is qualified to select and enroll national defense students.    Under the university motto, namely, "unity, diligence, truth-seeking, and creativity ", the University has been stressing the training of students' basic theory, knowledge and skills. The primary concern of the University is to produce well-rounded graduates of high quality, to teach according to students' aptitude and to conduct effective individual teaching .It takes flexible credit system and encourages top students to take a second major in their spare time. After taking qualification examination, those high-scoring freshmen are grouped into an experimental class and offered extra courses on weekends. the University offers students over 20 kinds of scholarships and subsidies. The university attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange. It has established stable relationships with more than 20 universities of many countries. The Sino-French Business Administration Institute of Nanchang University, is a joint academic institute between Nanchang University and University de Poitiers of France to train MBA. And it has gradually pushed the cooperation field ahead to the areas of Electronic Information, Electric Power and Automation Engineering, which is greatly commended by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the Ministry of Education of China, and the government of France. The Sino-British Joint Institute established between the University and the University of Abertay Dundee of Scotland was to enroll postgraduate students in the specialists of Software and Information Technology Engineering. In the fields like Food Engineering and Information Technology, the cooperation of teaching and research has been carried out with the Royal Technology Institute of Thailand. Besides, the food pilot scale experiment plant of Jiangxi-OAI Research Institute, which is a joint program between Jiangxi and Germany, has been put into operation. The Software Development and Application Program, which is the joint cooperation among China, Japan. USA. and EU, are also going on smoothly.
